Redefining the Croatian Economic Sentiment Indicator

چکیده
Abstract—Based on Business and Consumer Survey (BCS) data, the European Commission (EC) regularly publishes the monthly Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI) for each EU member state. ESI is conceptualized as a leading indicator, aimed ad tracking the overall economic activity. In calculating ESI, the EC employs arbitrarily chosen weights on 15 BCS response balances. This paper raises the predictive quality of ESI by applying nonlinear programming to find such weights that maximize the correlation coefficient of ESI and year-on-year GDP growth. The obtained results show that the highest weights are assigned to the response balances of industrial sector questions, followed by questions from the retail trade sector. This comes as no surprise since the existing literature shows that the industrial production is a plausible proxy for the overall Croatian economic activity and since Croatian GDP is largely influenced by the aggregate personal consumption.

Predicting the probability of recession in Croatia: Is economic sentiment the missing link?*1
This paper aims to assess the possibility of predicting Croatian recessionary episodes using probit models. The authors first estimate a baseline static model using four leading indicators of recession (monetary base, unemployment, industrial production, and CROBEX stock market index). Lag lengths of up to 6 months are examined for each of the observed variables in the probit specification, and...

This paper touches upon the differences between inflation perceptions and expectations of different socio-demographic groups (with respect to age, gender, income and education), a topic that has not so far been adequately represented in Croatia. The analysis is based on a unique dataset obtained from Consumer Surveys (conducted by the Croatian National Bank). Indicators of perceived and expecte...
متن کاملBusiness Climate Indicator as a Predictor of Croatian Industrial Production
Business and Consumer Surveys (BCS) are one of the most frequently used tools to assess economy’s cyclical behavior. Croatia has been conducting the surveys continually since 1995. Nevertheless, there is still a research niche in the Croatian BCS framework that has not been adequately represented. The Joint Harmonised EU Programme of Business and Consumer Surveys suggests Business Climate Indic...

In this study, a model of Bayesian Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium (DSGE) from Real Business Cycles (RBC) approach with the aim of identifying the factors shaping price bubbles of Tehran Stock Exchange (TSE) was specified. The above-mentioned model was conducted in two scenarios. In the first scenario, the baseline model with sentiment shock was examined. In this model, stock price bubbl...
متن کاملDebunking Sentiment Lexicons: A Case of Domain-Specific Sentiment Classification for Croatian
Sentiment lexicons are widely used as an intuitive and inexpensive way of tackling sentiment classification, often within a simple lexicon word-counting approach or as part of a supervised model. However, it is an open question whether these approaches can compete with supervised models that use only word-representation features. We address this question in the context of domain-specific sentim...
